Okay so here’s the thing about salad: It’s good for you, and really can compliment a decent lunch or even evening meal, but I think most people will agree that it doesn’t taste particularly attractive.
Let’s be honest, no-one’s really a fan of eating leaves unless they’re covered in something slightly more tasty, like a nice vinaigrette.
If we smother it in melted cheese, which most people do agree is fairly delicious (sorry for the offensive/racist blogging towards all the lactose intolerant people out there, peace bros), it would be significantly less healthy and so would defeat the object.
Vinegar is a fairly love/hate taste and only demented people like mayonnaise (sure, that includes MOST people but I’m not above calling them all demented, it’s mayonnaise for gods sake), so there is clearly a gap here.
We need some way to make salad properly tasty, rather than one of those things that polishes the saddle on your high horse so you can ride around all day feeling good about yourself and your <30 inch waistline and your low cholesterol.
I’m not totally sure on what can be done for this matter, because it’s a difficult area. If you smother it all in gravy, it’s going to make it soggy and difficult to eat, and depending on how you’ve made your gravy it might also be depriving vegetarians of about 50% of their stingy diet. If you sprinkle cinnamon on it’ll make it sweet, and a salad is more often than not served with savoury food so that might not mix too well.
So what’s to do? I mean sure there IS a school of thought that salad isn’t that much of a big deal and you could eat it pretty happily as is and it tastes okay and that these people are rabbits, but they have an opinion and it deserves to be respected (ish).
I think the only sensible option is for salad to be craftily integrated into meals, as it is in burgers, rather than stuck on the side of your plate or (god forbid) served as a dish outright.
It should be concealed within a healthy amount of carbs, like in a pasta salad, only with the balance of pasta:salad shifted from 40:60 to 65:35. Same goes for chicken salads and goats cheese salads and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WILL PEOPLE PLEASE GO SPARINGLY WITH THE MAYONNAISE.
So yeah, to summarise: salads are okay, but not particularly tasty, so should be better integrated into more palatable foods to make them easier to incorporate in a days meals.
They can stay the fuck out of cereal, though.
